Cagliari city

"... and suddenly here Cagliari: a naked town rising steep, steep, golden, piled naked to the sky from the plain at the beginning of the deep bay without forms. It 'strange and rather surprising, not at all similar to Italy . The city is crowded upward, almost miniature, and makes me think of Jerusalem: without trees, without shelter, which stands bare and proud, remote as if back in history as a city in the missal miniated by a monaco. one wonders how it ever got there. seems like Spain or Malta: not Italy.
(D.H. Lawrence)

Cagliari, overlooking the Bay of Angels, is an ancient city founded by the Phoenicians. Considered the center of political, economic, tourist and cultural center of Sardinia, situated on seven hills, Castello, Colle San Michele, Colle di Bonaria, Monte Urpinu , Monte Claro, Tuvu Mannu and Tuvixeddu. The city, surrounded by impressive towers and fortifications, houses the largest and most important Punic necropolis in the Mediterranean, Tuvixeddu, whose archaeological remains are preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Cagliari. Of natural interest is the Botanical Gardens, a green lung in the heart of Cagliari, which contains many species of tropical and Mediterranean plants. For birdwatchers, the town hosts Molentargius pond, wetland area protected by the European Community, with a rich fauna and colonies of pink flamingos. In the heart of the city you can visit the ancient Cathedral of Santa Maria and the Basilica of Bonaria, and also the characteristic streets of the historic districts of Castello, Marina and Stampace, with colors and flavors of the fishing tradition in the city.

Beaches

The Poetto beach

The long coastline stretches from Cagliari and Quartu s. Elena and It's dominated by the promontory of Sella del Diavolo. The legend says that Lucifer, after being thrown into the sea with his saddle, he left the imprint of that stone, which then took the name of Devil's Saddle.

Easily accessible from Calamosca through a natural path traveled in one hour, the "Sella del Diavolo" offers a panorama of the city and the coast. Due to the proximity of the pond of Molentargius and Saline, from Poetto beach you can admire the flight of pink flamingos that nest undisturbed since 1993 in a protected area, unique in Italy, separated from the street by a wall of reeds.

The Poetto beach is visited by the first decade of the twentieth century, it's connected to the city with smooth and efficient public transportation services.
